ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award
Presentation of the Host City
We are very proud to present Dubai as the host city for the eleventh edition of the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award.

Strategically located at the centre of the world, Dubai has become a leading business and travel hub. It is located on the Eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, in the south west corner of the Arabian Gulf. It is extremely well known for its warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage, and the Emirati people are welcoming and generous in their approach to visitors.

In Dubai, you will find a unique blend of East and West, the ancient and the modern, along with timeless deserts and golden beaches. The best option for the international opening of our contest to architects from all over the world.

The buildings lining the Bur Dubai side of the Creek provided the main panorama of the old city. The traditional facades of these buildings have been restored to their original state, with wooden windows, decorative gypsum panels and screens.

Dubai’s culture is rooted in Islam, providing a strength and inspiration that touches all aspects of everyday life. Virtually every neighbourhood has its own mosque, where the faithful congregate for prayer five times every day.

One of the largest and most beautiful -Jumeirah Mosque- is a spectacular example of modern Islamic architecture. Built of stone in medieval Fatimid style, the mosque is particularly attractive at night when subtle lighting throws its artistry into sharp relief.

Dubai's architecture is a stunning mix of the historical and ultra modern. As one of the fastest growing cities in the world it is looking to rival Hong Kong, New York and Shanghai as the skyscraper capital of the world.

As always, the professional qualifications of the members of the Jury bear witness to the value of the Award and we thank them in advance for their dedication. We would also like to express our thanks to the Dubai Municipality and all the institutions that have helped this call for presentations to take shape.
